    After inadvertently destroying the life of his best friend, Ryu Narutaki abandons everything and leaves Japan. He nearly dies at a church in a foreign land before he is saved by a Korean boxer named Hwang Johan.

    Both men carry deep scars, and as their lonely souls come together, it soon becomes clear that they are soul mates. The threads of fate bind them with such suffocating tightness that they find themselves deciding to live together. They travel to Berlin, Seoul and Tokyo, experiencing unforgettable pain, suffering and, ultimately, joy. “Soul Mate” is a soulful romance between two young men that spans 10 years.

      This is interesting. Ok Taec yeon is so versatile. This must have a good storyline. Soulmate is not limited to a romantic relationship. And if this film conveys a much deeper message, am pretty sure the leads deliver!❤

      So seated for this! News dropped that Taecyeon was cast in this back in June 2024. It was originally slated for a August 2025 release, but got pushed back. There have been questions along the way if this will actually be a BL or not, and its still not clear from the content released so far.

      For fans of Thai BLs, some Japanese BLs are cute, but there are just as many dark, gritty and disturbing (e.g. Cherry Magic vs The Journey To Killing You). Even the cute ones don't do pretty the same way as Thai and Korean productions. A happy ending is not guaranteed, and endings are often left open. Each country has their own storytelling style. IMHO one of the best JBLs is the movie His (2020) because it realistically portrays societal pressures and having no win choices. Life~Love on the Line (2020) is also a good one, but the movie edit is better since it includes scenes that were cut in the series. The Soul Mate trailer gives me similar vibes to those movies as well as When It Rains, It Pours (2025) series.

      Also, since the main characters in Soul Mate story are athletes, there will invariably be comparisons to Heated Rivalry. Soul Mate was in the works before development for Heated Rivalry began in early 2025. Casting was announced in June 2025, and it started airing at the end of November 2025. Heated Rivalry is a MLM story, not BL. MLM originated in slash fiction in the 70s and 80s, and it generally has been more inclusive of the queer community. A very simplified origination of BL is in Japan with yaoi in the 90s written by women for women with heteronormative tropes, many of which are still part of the genre. MLM and BL are different genres that have been evolving and gaining popularity along the same tangent. I have enjoyed stories from both genres.

      Some of the stories in the manhwa are set in Russia and Korea, Japan and Korea, and revolve around the mafia. It's possible these stories share the same plot. Remember yaoi girl likes all cute things 😀🔥
