アイドルの当たり年と言われた1982年のデビューで、「花の82年組」の1人であった。1981年7月11日、16歳の誕生日目前に出場した日本テレビ系列のオーディション番組『スター誕生!』で山口百恵の「夢先案内人」を歌って、合格。これを機に、ワーナー・パイオニアとのレコード契約を締結した。1982年5月1日、16歳の時にシングル「スローモーション」でデビューし、2枚目のシングル「少女A」がヒットした。
