愛称は「ミポリン」作詞家としても活動。その際は「北山 瑞穂（きたやま みずほ）」と「一咲（いっさく）」というペンネームを使用していた時期もあった。実妹は女優の中山忍。ほかに実母と義父との間に生まれた12歳下の弟がいる。1982年、小金井市立緑中学校1年生の時に原宿でスカウトされる。原宿でスカウトされる以前も、映画や劇団のオーディションを多数受けていた。実父の記憶はかすかにある、という。1985年6月21日、シングル『「C」』でアイドル歌手としてもデビュー。その後、女優としても活躍。

She also has a younger brother who is 12 years younger than her, born to her biological mother and stepfather. In 1982, she was scouted in Harajuku when she was in the first grade at Koganei Municipal Midori Junior High School. Before being scouted in Harajuku, she had auditioned for many movies and theater companies. She says she has vague memories of her biological father. On June 21, 1985, she made her debut as an idol singer with the single “C”. She later became active as an actress.
