This is a Kowatari-udei pot from 300 years ago. It was once used to hold junipers and won the Kokufu Award. Gyozan copied it and made it. This is the original . This one has a square hole. (It’s a big hole!) This one is named “Akebono.” This is the original. Gyozan copied it. No. It’s not a copy. (That would be an homage.) Yes . He imitated it because it has a lovely shape. This one is Kowatari-udei, but the other one is a pinkish color, isn’t it? This one is made with soil called Touka-dei, which is very rare. There are very few pots with cloud-shaped feet. (What is Kowatari?) Kowatari refers to bowls made in China over 250 years ago. These bowls were commissioned by the Qing (Shin) emperors, Qianlong (Kenryu-tei) and Yongzheng (Yousei-tei). There were no wars during those times, and things were calm. Therefore, the art pieces commissioned by the emperors were made at their best during those times. This is a red clay bowl. It would be fantastic to put a Shinpaku (Chinese juniper ) in it. I’d like to plant a champion tree in it. It’s like giving a person a pair of good shoes. (I see.) Here’s another bowl. This is a very old celadon bowl. It dates from the late period of the Yongzheng (Yousei-tei) emperor’s reign , the period before the Qianlong (Kenryu-tei) emperor’s reign. Only during that 12-year period could good works be made. It was brought to Japan before World War II. This is a masterpiece from that era. (These pieces are beautiful despite being hundreds of years old.) Yes. This one was carefully preserved. (Really?) This is an old Chinese bowl. The one on the top shelf is a bowl made by Gishin Ono. He was one of the founders of Koiwai Farm. At the age of 35, he was the economic advisor to Yataro Iwasaki. He invited a potter to his residence to make bowls. He apparently gave them as gifts to business leaders. This is his masterpiece. (Did he give this as a gift?) Apparently so. This one is in excellent condition. There are many pieces here with such stories. All of these bowls also have stories . These bowls were fired from the Meiji period to the early Showa period. Here are bowls such as Yusen. This one was made in the Meiji period. It has “Great Japan” written on it, so it was intended for export. There was a producer in Kyoto named Kanzan. He gathered potters and had them make beautiful pots. He sold them all over the world. Among these, round pots are rare and rare. It seems that round pots were presented to the Imperial Household Agency along with other dishes. This is also a Kanzan pot. It is a very rare pot. His small bowls are said to be the best in Japan.
