精神病の妹が邪魔になり殺害…生首を公衆トイレに遺棄
What if the family member you trust the most was actually planning to kill you? March 15, 2013 New Taipei City, Taiwan At the Sanchong Police Precinct A police officer unfolded a letter that had arrived that day, looking puzzled. Police officer: “This isn’t a prank, right?” The letter was written in shaky, frail handwriting, as if the writer’s hands were trembling. Letter: “There is a body in the men’s restroom at the park. I cannot deal with it myself. Please, someone kind, help me. From a Good Samaritan.” At the same time, in Chiayi County, about 250 kilometers from Xinbei a man cleaning a public restroom as staring fixedly at one spot. Cleaner: “What is this? The smell is awful.” What he was looking at was something placed inside the toilet’s water tank. A plastic bag containing something. He nervously began unwrapping the multiple layers of plastic. And from inside emerged the salted head of a woman. Cleaner: “Aaaaahhh!” A woman’s head found in a public restroom and a mysterious letter sent to the police. Why was this woman brutally murdered and her remains abandoned in such a public place? The killer’s plan in this case would only be complete once the body was discovered. Osu! Osu! Ken chan here. Yami Yamiko here. So, Yamiko, this time, it’s a story from Taiwan. I actually went to Taiwan back when I was a university student. What did you do there? I went there with my then-girlfriend— the so-called “legendary knife girlfriend.” There’s this place called Shilin Night Market. I still remember it so vividly… memento? I still remember it so vividly, though! You know what I mean? I really couldn’t make out what they were saying. There was this insanely huge fried chicken… Ah, you mean that thing called “ji pai” or something? I don’t know the name, but it was about the size of my face. Yeah, Yeah, Yeah That place has a basement too, right? I think I’ve been there too. And also, you know, that fluffy shaved ice t hat was popular in Harajuku back in the day. Ice Monster. Never heard of it. Ice Monster was that fluffy shaved ice shop they used to have in Omotesando and Harajuku, right? The original version actually came from Taiwan. Well, a lot of sweets have come from Taiwan, haven’t they? Like Gong Cha. Those kinds of bubble teas and such. They’ve been imported quite a lot. It was quite a long time ago. Honestly, Taiwan’s tourist spots are almost as clean as those in Japan. Rather than being super exciting, it was just… decent. But after some time has passed, Taiwan’s actually pretty easy to get to. It’s just a bit past Okinawa. So I’ve been thinking I’d like to visit again. If any of our viewers know of interesting places in Taiwan recently, or have stories related to Taiwan, please leave them in the comments. What we’re going to introduce this time is a murder case that happened in Taiwan. In this horrifying case, a woman’s salted head was found in a public restroom. That’s scary. Why would someone deliberately put it in a public restroom where everyone could see? Exactly. Why did the culprit intentionally abandon the victim’s head in such a busy location? I’d like you all to keep that in mind and make your own guesses as you watch. On the day the crime was discovered, a mysterious note was found with the woman’s head. And what was the identity of the culprit that the note revealed? False Kindness March 15, 2013 Shuishang, Chiayi County, Taiwan Inside a stall in the public restroom at Dongshi Xiantian Temple a cleaner was staring at something, frowning in puzzlement. Cleaner: “What a terrible smell…” On top of the toilet tank was an object wrapped in multiple layers of plastic bags. Even through the plastic, the object gave off an overpowering stench. The cleaner cautiously reached out and began untying the mouth of the bag. There were seven layers of plastic bags in total. When he opened the final bag… Inside was, unbelievably— a human head wrapped in women’s underwear. The cleaner screamed and flung the bag from his hands. What was strange was that the head was covered in salt, preserved like pickled food. For some reason, it had been carefully treated for preservation before being placed there. Inside the bag was not only the head, but also a note. It contained just one line: the name of a woman—Chen Wanting. Is that the woman’s name? Why would something like that be placed with the remains? That was so the killer could have the police identify the victim. On the same day the woman’s head was found, a letter arrived at the Sanchong Police Precinct in Xinzhuang City, 250 kilometers from Shuishang. Letter: “Chen Wanting’s body is in the men’s restroom of the park, 200 meters from Shuishang Farmers’ Association. From a Good Samaritan.” The anonymously sent letter informed them of the remains placed in the park’s restroom. Just as the note with the remains indicated, it also stated that the remains belonged to a woman named Chen Wanting. Because the note and the letter matched, police began investigating the identity of the woman named Chen Wanting. There were 64 women with that name across Taiwan. As the investigation progressed, they found that one of them matched the dental records of the abandoned head. The victim had been missing for four months before the head was discovered. She was a 35-year-old woman living in Xinzhuang City. What drew attention was the person calling themselves a “Good Samaritan” who sent the letter to police. At first, police thought this person had seen the body but lacked the courage to report it directly. They were even grateful to them. But in reality, if the letter’s sender had deliberately reported anonymously, they were actually a very suspicious person. The true identity of the “Good Samaritan” was the victim’s own brother. Handwriting analysis revealed that the writing in the anonymous letter matched that of Chen Jiahu, the brother who lived with the victim, Wanting. Furthermore, security cameras near the public restroom captured footage of Jiahu in disguise. His smartphone’s GPS data also showed that around the time the remains were found, he had been at the location. The “Good Samaritan” who helped solve the case was, shockingly, the very person who had killed the woman. The fact that the killer was her own brother is just too shocking… So he killed her, then reported it himself? Why would he do that? To understand the reason, we need to know what kind of relationship the siblings had. Jiahu had been greatly troubled by his sister before she was killed. A sister who had changed. Thirteen years before the incident, sometime in 2000 Chen Wanting, then 22 years old, was glaring at her husband, eyes brimming with tears. Wanting: “What on earth is going on?” At this point, four years into their marriage, Wanting discovered her husband’s affair. Repairing the relationship proved extremely difficult, and the two chose to divorce. In her school days, Wanting was known as the most beautiful girl on campus. Among her friends, she was one of the first to get married and seemed to have found happiness. But that happiness did not last long. Her identity, built since childhood on being adored, was deeply damaged by the collapse of her marriage. After the divorce, Wanting attempted suicide and turned to drug abuse, causing her mental state to deteriorate rapidly. At some point, she began wandering the neighborhood dressed oddly in pajamas with heavy makeup. In her desire for money to buy cigarettes and drugs, Wanting went around telling the neighbors things like this— Wanting: “How about sleeping with me for 500 dollars a time?” That’s about 2,000 yen in Japanese currency. Wanting repeatedly engaged in sexual relations with local men. She became known by the nickname “Xiao Tiantian.” In Taiwan, the nickname means “cutie,” but in her case, it was laced with mockery at how far she had fallen. I understand she was shocked by her husband’s affair and the divorce, but this is a really extreme decline. It’s the very definition of being self-destructive. One’s early twenties are a time when people search for their identity in society. Experiencing a spouse’s infidelity and a divorce during that time was deeply damaging for her. So this leads to today’s keyword; Identity Crisis. A concept proposed in 1950 by American psychologist Erik Erikson. It refers to a state in which a person loses sight of their purpose and role in society. Especially from adolescence to the early twenties, people tend to strongly seek out who they are— in other words, their identity in society. For Wanting, who married during this period, the role of “wife” was a key part of her identity. Losing that role triggered an identity crisis for her. An identity crisis can make one feel as though they have become nobody, unsure of what to live for, and bring about a sense of emptiness, which can even lead to depression or social withdrawal. Wanting had been admired for her beauty since childhood. For someone like her, losing the identity of a happily married woman who wed earlier than anyone else must have been unbearably painful. Since her divorce, Wanting had been in a mentally shattered state. Seeing this, her mother asked Wanting’s brother, Chen Jiahu, to take care of her. Thus, Wanting began living with her brother Jiahu. She was receiving 8,000 New Taiwan dollars per month in disability benefits, but since she could not manage the money herself, Jiahu gave it to her in small amounts. This might sound like he was a caring and responsible brother, but Wanting was reportedly saying this to the neighbors— Wanting: “My brother keeps my money, and he won’t give it to me unless I sleep with him.” Given Wanting’s mental state, it’s unclear whether this claim was true, but spreading such statements caused Jiahu to lose his standing in the neighborhood. Jiahu: “Damn it! Because of Wanting, I’ve become a complete laughingstock. Nothing has gone right since I started living with her.” At the time, Jiahu was burdened with other serious troubles besides Wanting. Although he worked as a cook in a small restaurant, his income was low. Furthermore, in 2012, he married a woman from mainland China, borrowing money to pay the bride price, which left his bank account nearly empty. On top of that, he had to care for his sister, and Jiahu was reaching the limit of his patience. Jiahu: “There’s only one way to get out of this life.” I get that his situation was frustrating, but there’s no way killing her was necessary. He could have had her hospitalized in a psychiatric ward or taken other measures. The reason Jiahu killed his sister Wanting was not simply because she was a burden. That reason also connects to why he left her head in a public restroom. The Price of a Life Early in the morning of December 9, 2012, Jiahu awoke to the sound of his sister talking on the phone. Wanting: “How about tonight? Five hundred dollars is fine.” Wanting was once again trying to sell herself to some man. Jiahu clenched his teeth, his face contorting with anger. Jiahu: “You disgrace.” That afternoon, their mother came to check on Wanting. For Jiahu, who had long harbored murderous intent toward his sister, this became the signal to act. Their mother visited every three days. Her visit that day meant she would not be coming again for the next two or three days. That night, Jiahu strangled Wanting with his bare hands after she returned from prostitution. Once he confirmed her pulse had stopped, he used a Chinese cleaver to sever her head. He wrapped the severed head in clothing and covered it with salt to preserve it. The skilled way in which the preservation was done was something only Jiahu, with years of experience as a cook, could manage. That’s completely psychopathic. It was his own sister. And it gets even worse from here. After salting the head, Jiahu looked at the underwear his sister had been wearing moments earlier. He casually picked it up and wrapped the salted head with it. He wrapped the head in Wanting’s underwear because it carried traces of bodily fluids from the men she had been with. Jiahu wanted to make her death appear to be the result of a sexual assault and murder, in an attempt to mislead the police investigation. Once he had finished dealing with the head, Jiahu turned his attention to the rest of her body. Jiahu: “Now I just have to get rid of the rest.” With that thought in mind, he took out a tool he was accustomed to using as a cook. In the middle of the night, the apartment echoed with the cold, mechanical sound and the noise of something being crushed. In front of Jiahu’s emotionless gaze, the meat grinder was spitting out minced human flesh. After a while, when the grinding was finished, Jiahu dissolved Wanting’s minced remains in water and slowly flushed them down the bathroom drain. Jiahu: “Now the evidence is completely gone.” The next day, in the apartment one floor below, a repair crew arrived to deal with plumbing issues. Plumber: “Ground meat? Who dumped such a huge amount down here?” The workers who cleared the meat clogging the pipes had no idea it was human flesh. Four months later, in March 2013, Jiahu took a train 250 kilometers from his home to Chiayi County, and placed his sister’s head in a public restroom. On the way, he changed his clothes three times to disguise himself and avoid recognition. After that, Jiahu sent a letter to the local police in New Taipei City to ensure the abandoned head would be identified as belonging to his sister, Wanting. Letter: “Chen Wanting’s body is in the men’s restroom at a park 200 meters from the Shuishang Farmers’ Association. From a Good Samaritan.” It never occurred to him that the handwriting in that letter would become undeniable evidence against him. What’s puzzling is why Jiahu deliberately placed the head somewhere it could easily be found and then sent a letter to the police. It was because if Wanting’s remains were not found, he would not be able to collect the life insurance payout on her. In fact, Jiahu had previously worked as an insurance salesman, and using that experience, he had taken out five life insurance policies in his sister’s name. The total coverage was six million New Taiwan dollars. Jiahu did not earn much money, and with wedding expenses, he was in debt. He planned to get the roughly 20 million yen payout to escape his financial troubles. So basically, he was trying to turn his sister into cash. The image of a “Good Samaritan” in his letter is the complete opposite of the truth. Exactly. That said, taking care of a sister with a mental illness was clearly a difficult task. Of course, resorting to murder is absolutely inexcusable. But we do need to consider the burden on the caregiver as well, because without proper social welfare systems in place, situations where both sides collapse are not uncommon. And especially as Japan moves further into an aging society, including policymakers, if anyone in government is watching this, this is something that really needs to be reconsidered seriously. On March 17, 2013, through handwriting analysis, security camera footage, and GPS data from his phone, Jiahu was identified and arrested. Charged with murder, mutilation, and abandonment of a body, Jiahu said the following in court: Jiahu: “Aliens implanted a chip in my brain, and they are still controlling me with laser waves.” Jiahu pretended to have a mental illness, but psychiatric evaluation found no abnormalities. Given the cruel and selfish nature of the crime, the prosecution sought the death penalty. What was unexpected was what Jiahu’s mother said in her statement to the court. Mother: “They are both my children. I have already lost my daughter— please don’t take my son away too!” The mother tearfully pleaded with the judge. Because they were brother and sister, the case took the unusual turn of the victim’s family asking for a reduced sentence for the killer. About two years after the incident, on April 30, 2015, Jiahu was sentenced to life imprisonment. It’s possible that his escape from the death penalty was due to his mother’s desperate plea. Hatred born within the closest of relationships—family— and the plot to turn an inconvenient sister into money, made this one of the most despicable murder cases. On the other hand, if—like in this case— you had a family member whose mental illness caused problems for those around them, how far would you be able to go in supporting them? Continuing to care for someone simply because they’re family can risk destroying your own mental health. Sometimes, it may be necessary to have the courage to rely on public services. If you found yourself in a situation where a loved one was beyond your ability to handle, what choice would you make? Not Allowed on YouTube The Secret Society ALGOMETRY This video contains material that would be restricted on YouTube. A sudden act of violence in the classroom. A female student stabbed repeatedly. Why was she targeted? What if a classmate suddenly went on a rampage? Would you be able to stop it? October 15, 2024 Caranavi, La Paz Department, Bolivia At a teacher training school in the city, a shocking incident took place. Graphic footage will be shown. One male student at the teacher training school suddenly pulled out a knife and attacked a female student. The attack happened so suddenly that the surrounding students could only watch from a distance. Female student: “Stop! Please!” The female student fought desperately, but she was no match for the larger male student, and was repeatedly stabbed. The rampage continued until a male staff member subdued him several minutes later. The male student was finally pulled away from the limp, unmoving female student. It is said he was muttering something under his breath. Male student: “This happened because you betrayed me.” In what should have been a peaceful morning classroom, a female student was suddenly stabbed repeatedly. Why did the male perpetrator commit the attack in front of so many people? The man who claimed he had been betrayed was a monster consumed by delusion.
