Produced by PADDY HOUSE The Satsuma Sendai
Grand Tug-of-war began in 1600. When the Shimazu clan wanted to raise
troop morale before a major battle. A little over 25 years ago,
in 1994, we celebrated the 395th anniversary
of the Battle of Sekigahara. There are 2 Generals leading
the rope-pullers and Disruptors. The festival star, the man in the
middle, beating the drum of the Uptown troupe,
was Hiroshi Arima, my father. The one bearing the General’s banner
was Yoshiaki Nakazono. He’s the father of my childhood
friend, Noriko, or Tenko. Tenko, at 10 years old. Me, also 10 years old. My little sister, Atsuko,
nickname Akko, was always close by. It was my dream to one day be the
Lead Drummer for our ancient festival. Love and the
Grand Tug-of-war June, 2019 They’ll soon choose the
three main festival leaders. Who do you think
they’ll pick this year? I’m the head judge,
I can’t say. Alright, so I’ll just
talk to myself, then. I hear they’ve chosen
the Lead Drummers. Your employee, Yoshidome,
leads the Uptown team. And Fukumoto is representing
the Downtown team. They’re the same age as your boy,
and same as us when we did it. Takeshi should be one of the
top three this year and Lead Drummer
next year. Excuse me. No, my boy’s not ready
to be Lead Drummer. I’ve looked forward to him
succeeding your role. I have a daughter,
she can’t do it. Little Tenko, eh? She’s always been
so very determined. Her daughter, our grandchild,
is a tomboy, too. Your Takeshi’s done well
at work and for the festival. I don’t think so. He refused to work for me
and he abandoned the festival. He ended up chasing foolish
dreams in Tokyo. You were so happy when they
both entered high school. Your memory’s playing
tricks on you. He got into the famed
Waseda University. You pretended to be upset,
but you were very proud. Everyone knows that. It’s time you stood up
for your boy. Look at him,
dead-drunk again. Call his wife. Building Operations &
Engineering Management Takeshi, I need your help. Mom, can’t you knock first? Sorry, son. Get a grip! Sorry about this, Takeshi. We shouldn’t let him
drink so much. His age is catching up with him. -Thanks.
-Goodnight. Damn Lead Drummer! Dad, lie down on the bedding. Good work, Takeshi. Dear, you need to undress. Hands off me! Morning. No breakfast, Akko? I don’t have time. It’s rare to see you
in a suit. I’m off to
Government Office. Mom, I’ll be home late.
I’m eating out. Bye. I’m done. The purification ceremony
is at 3pm, so be on time. I’ll be there. I’m off. Take care. I’m done. Sendai Station What’s wrong? Sir!
Are you okay? Quick!
Someone call an ambulance! Quick, it’s urgent! Ground-breaking &
Purification Ceremony Where’s that boy
got to now? Maybe something came up? Place the pads
on the patient’s chest… The ambulance’s here. Over here. I’m a doctor.
He’s in cardiac arrest. Make way. Mr. Arima, we really
should get started. Where’s Takeshi got to? Give him a few
more minutes. Sacred ceremonies can’t wait. Mr. Shinto Priest,
please begin. He saved a man’s life,
cut him some slack. Did he live? The Korean doctor went
with him to hospital. So you didn’t save him? Arima Construction Group Good evening. Any idea why Mom
asked us all here? No idea.
I had plans for tonight. It’s your mom’s birthday today,
did you forget? I totally forgot about it. She wouldn’t summon us
for her party. Good evening, Ma’am. I’m sorry to ask you all
here after work. If you don’t mind,
I’ll begin. Today marks my 60th birthday. Japan’s official
age of retirement. As of today, I am quitting my job
as manager of Arima Construction. What? Are you serious? I don’t get it. You three will
do the housework. I’m retiring from work
and from housework. The person taking over
as manager here… I’m not doing it, Mom. You won’t have to. Hidemi will take over
as office manager. That’s very selfish. I’ve spent my life pandering
to your selfish needs. That’s all. Arima Residence Mom, it’s still early,
where are you off to? Mom, why didn’t you
wake me up? You’re both old enough
to look after yourselves. Right, then. I’m off to enjoy my new,
carefree, life of retirement. No breakfast? And I’m running late. What’s all this noise
so early? Dad! Where’s breakfast? Takeshi, let’s go. Where do we start? Let’s begin with the material storage
in the back. Pay attention,
or you’ll get hurt. Arima Construction Group Have you finished the estimate
for Sakuraba Construction? No time for that now.
Where’s last year’s financial reports? Your wife handles the financials. The client’s furious. So bloody what? Oh, sorry. Stupid client, not you. Not you, another client. Fukumoto’s lad will head up
the Downtown Crew. Didn’t he quit high school
over a fight? Back then, he was the
baseball team star. Some friend got into trouble,
he tried to fix it. He’s a cool guy. You don’t fix things
with threats and violence. I won’t have that. Takeshi, within two years, you should be
leading the Uptown Crew. Not a chance. C’mon, it’s been your family
tradition for generations. I’m done. Darling. -You’re late.
-Sorry about that. Work hard, dear. I’ll be straight home, love. You two are so affectionate. You sound like a gigolo. He’s my gigolo. I’d better go. Be careful. Sister Akko:
Your turn to make dinner tonight This won’t last forever,
will it? How do we change it? We can’t.
Mom has to change. But this is a Mom’s duty. And the office, too. That’s the problem.
She’s sick of doing everything. I should go eat out. I’ll head down to my bar. I’m home. You haven’t done
a lick of housework. Where’ve you been? I told you, remember?
I’m retired now. Right, then. We’ll just have to see
who caves in first. Takeshi! What? July Eh?
Uncle Arima? Hello, Tenko. Okay, I go shopping.
So what? -What’s going on?
-Stop it. On strike, is she?
She’s certainly got spirit. It’s been over a week now. Are you still stationed
in Tokyo? I’ve been posted here,
so we moved back. Really? Then you’ll get
to see this year’s tug-of-war. The troops I lead
will also participate. Your soldiers? I’m a platoon leader now. That’s very impressive, Tenko. Isn’t it? And your husband? Third Lieutenant
Noriko Nakazono, was officially divorced
as of May, 2019. Is that right? How could you stand being
stationed anywhere else? The festival never let
women participate. These days,
we welcome females. But I always wanted to be
one of the top three. I wish Takeshi
felt that way. So you two still have
a rocky relationship? Isn’t that Gentaro Fukumoto? He hasn’t changed since junior high.
I wonder what’s he’s doing now? He came back soon after
Takeshi did. Earlier this year,
he opened a restaurant. A restaurant?
That’s so out of character. They say he’ll be Lead Drummer
of the Downtown Crew. Seriously? But he always was
a stout-hearted fellow. Not coming in for a drink? I can’t. It’s my turn
to make dinner tonight. Sorry, I shouldn’t laugh. Say goodbye, dear. Uncle, if you’ll excuse us. See you. At ease. It’s my day off.
Why must I do housework? Stop complaining.
It’s my day off, too. Any idea where
Mom goes every day? I hope she’s not
having an affair. Don’t be silly. Akko, get that. Why me? Hello, Arima residence. Akko? You sound
so sexy on the phone. It’s Takenouchi, from the Tourism
Board. Is Takeshi there? It’s Takenouchi, from the
City Tourism Board. Who’s he? -Hello.
-Arima! It’s me, Takenouchi.
We were pals, in high school. You don’t remember me?
All the girls certainly do. -What girls?
-Listen. There’s a group of Korean
college women. Female college students? Young college girls? Yeah, sort of… Sounds like fun. Young college girls, seriously? Did I say that? You’re still a scoundrel,
aren’t you? Sorry, but one of our interpreters
got sick and canceled. Takeshi, sorry.
I know it’s your day off. Not at all. You!
From the station. Yes, you’re that
blundering lifesaver. You two know each other? That’ll make things easier. She’s our other interpreter,

Are you two close? No, he’s just today’s chef,
that’s all. I’m doing my exchange residence
at a clinic on Shimokoshiki Island. Why would a Korean doctor choose
to work on a Japanese island? Especially such a
remote island? Remember
“Dr. Koto’s Clinic?” From the manga.
That was on the same island. Yeah. I’m a big Japanese manga fan. Does that make me
a hipster? Yeah, just a bit. That’s me. Koshiki Island Hello, there. Thank you for coming. Hello, there. This is the place. A traditional Japanese inn. This way, please. Don’t steal my girl! I’ll escort you
to your rooms. This is the house specialty. Here you are. Let me introduce
tonight’s dishes. Silver-striped herring, flying squid,
mixed vegetables and broiled parrot fish. All local dishes,
sourced from local vendors. Thanks for all your
help today. Meet at 7am, out front.
And don’t dare be late. That’s my line. -Sendai Tug-of-war…
-Grand Tug-of-war… Go ahead. I’m confused about who’s the star
of the Sendai Grand Tug-of-war. How come it’s the drummer,
not someone pulling the rope? Well, that’s because… Let’s assume this is the mid-point
between both troops of tuggers. The Lead drummer stands here. No. 2 Drummer is around here. No. 3 Drummer is back here. There’s a total of 10 drummers
spaced along the line. And 1500 rope-tuggers,
on both teams, in one long line. The Lead Drummer uses tempo and
rhythm to control his team’s efforts. The other drummers… The No. 2 Drummer… No. 3 Drummer, right through to No. 10,
follow his lead and match his rhythm. This signals the tuggers to haul the
rope in time with the drumbeats. Is that clear? Not at all. Seriously? So the Lead Drummer is like
the commanding officer? Like the head coach
of a sports team? Exactly. And you can only be the
Lead Drummer once in your life. He’s the pride of all
we Sendai men. Noisy buggers!
It’s the middle of the night. Thanks for all your
hard work today. No, I should be
thanking you. My brother can be a nuisance. Yes, but he tries hard. I’d best go. I understand. Too much rain to work. The weatherman’s forecast
got it all wrong. So go home and
get some rest. It’ll be hard to catch up
after these storms. Okay, I’ll head home See you. Takeshi, this came from
City Office. PHOTOGRAPHS ENCLOSED Why’s he grinning
like a Cheshire cat? No idea. To Ms. Yo Jihyeun From Takeshi Arima Mr. Arima, thanks for your letter.
I was pleased to get it. I’ll send you pictures of our
Tug-of-war from last year. Here, we use two ropes,
Ozuna and Mezuna. Ozuna is the male rope
and Mezuna is the female. The rope ends are spliced
into loops. The male loop
goes into the female loop. A stout rod is inserted
to lock them together. Saturday the 27th, is the day
the three main roles are assigned. A lot of people want
Takeshi to lead. That’s ridiculous. Not just because
he’s your son. He’s a hard worker who
doesn’t seek the spotlight. Unlike you,
many appreciate him. He’s still far too green. Besides, he only came back after
he crashed and failed in Tokyo. Remember, he deserted us. You do harp on the past.
That’s not very manly. She’s right. Dad, today is recycled
garbage day. I know. You pick up the
clothes from the laundry. I will. C’mon, Takeshi. Soon as I finish this. All done. Ledger sheet Now I’m confident you can
handle everything, Hidemi. I’m still a little unsure, though. How are things at home? My husband and Akko
still don’t cut it. But Takeshi does, right? He does his best work
out of sight, with no fanfare. And he actually cares
about other people. That’s why he misses out
on so much. But those who notice,
really do appreciate him. I hope so. It looks great. I partake. Extra noodles. Thank you. Rumor says both Yoshidome and
Takeshi are up for selection. Having two candidates
from our firm is a great honor. They won’t pick me. You don’t know that. You’re the heir to
our construction company. That’s right. If you get chosen now,
next year you’ll be the leader. That’ll be you. Iced tea is ready. Keep your phones close,
the selection is tomorrow. Good day. Grand Tug-of-war Festival
September 22 Takeshi. Hi, where’s your missus? She went shopping. Coming in? Sure. Have you run into Tenko? No, but I hear she’s back. Too many transfers
caused her divorce. The marriage fell apart. She tries too hard
to look tough. Any husband would find that
hard to accept. Don’t tell her that.
She’ll knock you out. Thanks for the beer. He’s the only man who ever
really understood my Tenko. I’ll leave now. Good work. Our Hakata City shop gets big
crowds when the festival’s on. But up here, in the mountains,
you don’t get many. That’s for sure. What are the criteria for choosing
the 3 main festival roles? Is it their smarts, strengths,
or personal charisma? They’re more concerned with those who
actually get in and do the work. That’s the first criteria. But who chooses them?
The steering committee? It’s more of a consensus between the
Downtown and Uptown leadership. Who decides who’s
Uptown, or Downtown? It’s was geographical in the old days,
but now you’re free to choose. Cleaning’s all done.
Please check it. Good work, ladies. Ms. Arima, while I’m away for 3 days
I want you to run this branch. Yes, I’d love to. I’m eager to see the this year’s
Grand Tug-of-war Festival. I hope you get selected as
the Lead Drummer. Mr. Arima? What are you doing here? Well… He’s been waiting for hours. Hi there, Doctor. Dr. Hayashi, the clinic director. Your boyfriend? Yes, he is. No? Yes, I am. How do you do.
I’m Takeshi Arima. First time
on the island? Show him around.
I’ll do your afternoon clinic. Yes, but… No, go. Take your phone.
If I need you, I’ll call. Thank you, Doctor. That’s Napoleon Rock. So all the islanders’ lives
are in your hands? Yes, we’re very remote. Wow, that’s amazing. Will you have some
cold noodles? Don’t you worry about me. Well, I’m making them, anyway. Oh, no. Takeshi forgot to take his phone. Bloody stupid idiot! I don’t get the
Tug-of-war. Most combat sports
involve pushing, right. Like wrestling, judo
and rugby, too. I guess so. But pulling is only
in the tug-of-war. I wonder who
thought that up? Do you mind if
I call you Takeshi? In Korea,
we all use first names. So call me Jihyeun. Takeshi, don’t you love me? No, don’t say that. Great.
Because I’m in love with you. That’s how I can tell. You’re here with me,
but your mind is elsewhere. That’s not… I’ll walk you to the ferry. Restaurant & Bar
SLIDER Gentaro, are you here? I’m here. Still no call about
the festival? I’m sure it’ll come. Hello, Fukumoto speaking. Yes, I understand. I’d be honored
to be Lead Drummer. You did it! You’ll be very busy
for the next two months. I’ll do anything to help.
I’ll quit work to make it easier. Thank you. But Akko, you’re an Uptown girl
and I’m a Downtown guy. We’ll need to keep this a secret
until the festival’s over. Yes! Thank you very much.
I’m honored to be chosen. Dad, you’re Lead Drummer? Yes!
Fantastic, Daddy. Congratulations! I’ll need your total support
until the festival. You forget that my dad
was lead in his day. How about we celebrate
with some sushi? Yes! Lucky boy.
You love sushi. Where did you get to?
You’re hopeless. You ran away again,
didn’t you? Our Yoshidome was chosen and that
chef, Gentaro, is his opposite. You weren’t even
considered for a position. Tenko? Hey! Come on. Slow down, I’m no soldier. That’s an indirect kiss. How childish. So what if you weren’t
sitting at home, waiting? I know it’s ridiculous.
They’re so old-fashioned. But why run and hide?
That was pathetic. I didn’t run and hide. Your dad still blames you for leaving,
then failing in Tokyo. He’s so fixed in his ways. Dad assumed I’d come straight back
after graduating university. He wanted me to
take over the business. Parents can be very self-centered. I was harsh with him, too. I boasted I’d make a
success of myself in Tokyo. The 2009 Global Financial Crisis
wasn’t your fault. Your company went bankrupt,
many firms did. Dad can’t forgive me for slinking
back home as a failure. That’s just so stupid. That happened to Gentaro, too.
That’s why he’s back. You’ll have to give Yoshidome
your full support this year. Work hard and one day
you’ll be Lead Drummer. I guess you’re right. Even if you don’t,
it doesn’t matter. Show me how good you
are with the drums. Damn it.
I wish I had a penis. That’s enough of that talk.
Go, now! Sorry, Abbot. This reminds me of
our childhood. And you’ve been on my case
since we were kids. You were always
such high-maintenance. When did we start
feeling old and nostalgic? I wish I could go back
to those days. Here you are.
Our famous dumplings. -Thank you, dear.
-You’re so pretty. I yearn for my
own grandchildren. What about
Takeshi and Akko? Neither look like
marrying soon. “There’s none so blind
as those who don’t see.” I’m back. Hello, there Uncle. Have one with me? I’d love to, but I can’t drink
and drive with her. Thanks for babysitting, Mom. Come again anytime. It’s not what I hoped for. I’ll just be one of 3,000
rope-tuggers again. Don’t worry.
I’ll still go. Whether it’s 3,000, or 30,000,
I’ll still find you. Jihyeun. Thank you. No, it’s okay. Closed for Private Party An accomplished chef
and our Lead Drummer. We’re so proud of you,
Gentaro. Our school baseball club
salutes you. But I quit the club. No, you’re always
a member. You named your restaurant
“Slider,” right? You only quit school and the team
to end that problem. You stood up to them,
that’s noble. All five of them
were real scoundrels. Six of the buggers, not five. You beat up all six of them
with your bare hands. You’re our very own
high school legend. Our old team coach asked me
to present you this. High School
Graduation Certificate. -How come?
-It was legitimate self-defense. Your culinary school diploma got
converted to high school credits. Congratulations! Congratulations! Sorry, I didn’t mean to
fall pregnant. Don’t be silly.
No apology needed. It’s our baby. I’ll drop out of the
Grand Tug-of-war festival. I’ll tell them I’m retiring. Never! I want our baby
to be proud of you. Akko, what is it? Mom? This year’s three main festival leaders
from Uptown and Downtown. The Uptown Brigadier General
is Minoru Tajima. (Disruptors) Commanding General,
Akira Nakauchi. (Tuggers) Lead Drummer,
Ryuji Yoshidome. The Downtown Brigadier
General, Naoto Okazono. Commanding General
Sadaharu Araki. Lead Drummer,
Gentaro Fukumoto. Thank you, gentlemen. We beg your indulgence. Kawakita Electric Works I’m Ryuji Yoshidome,
the Uptown Crew lead drummer. Akira Nakauchi,
Commanding General. Minoru Tajima,
Brigadier General. We beg your favor. Do your best, lads. Please, be seated. I was honored to be
the official liaison between our Grand Festival and
the Korean Youngsan Tug-of-war. Chairman, you said the exact
same thing last year. But they didn’t hear it. Yoshidome was
here last year, sir. Were you? This year’s shochu
is superb, sir. Good work. Mr. President! I’ll meet you
at our retail outlet. All here? Gentaro Fukumoto,
Downtown Lead Drummer. I’m Sadaharu Araki,
Commanding General. Naoto Hokazono
Brigadier General. Give it your very best, lads. I’m embarrassed to offer shochu
to a shochu brewer. No, very appropriate, I say. September Mrs. Fumiko Arima 22nd, Grand
Tug-of-war Festival No limit on the number of men
pulling the rope. They’re out now,
recruiting as many as they can. Interesting isn’t it,
Ms. Arima? She’s ill, she left early. You spoke to her
before she left. -Did I?
-Yes, you did. Akko? -Here, towels.
-Thanks. Good work. More damn rain! It’s your gloomy face
that brings bad weather. The rain shut us
down again. Akko, you’d better tell
your father what’s happened. Father, the thing is… I’ve fallen pregnant. The baby’s father is
Gentaro Fukumoto. Gentaro?
The Downtown Lead Drummer? He’s got a bad reputation,
he’s a brawler. No, he’s a very earnest
and honest man. I’ve never even met him.
How earnest and honest is that? What about the festival? Makes no difference. It certainly does. He’ll take full responsibility
after the festival. You just said
there’s no connection. There was no need
to hide it from us. You should have
said something. You should talk, Mom. I saw you arm-in-arm
with some young guy. You’re the disgrace,
not me! Enough! You hit me?
Knowing I’m pregnant? Stop that now! You should be settled,
married, with children. That’s nonsense. I have a girlfriend
and we want to marry. Damn you! Why don’t you take care of
your wife, for once in your life? Takeshi? We’re supposed to be
a family, right? What do you mean? Jihyeun, a doctor I know,
I asked her about it. The medicine Mom’s taking. An anti-cancer drug. Mom… Are you okay, Ma’am? Thanks. So now you all know. Kagoshima University Hospital There’s no immediate problem. She’ll need chemotherapy and
radiation, followed by palliative care. Doctor, whatever it takes.
No matter the cost. Don’t worry,
we’ll all do our best. Dr. Ikeda is the very best.
You needn’t worry. Takeshi, who’s this? Dr. Yo Jihyeun. Exchange resident at
Shimokoshiki Island clinic. She’ll be supervising
Mom’s treatment. Thank you,
we beg your indulgence. Thank you. Takeshi’s mom? Apparently, it’s quite serious. She wasn’t up to mischief,
she was seeing a doctor. She may not get to watch
this year’s festival. Lieutenant, the men have
finished the drill. Dad, I have to go. Prepare for inspection. Roger that, Lieutenant. She’s been busy
preparing for her death. Preparations for death? Tidying up loose ends. Preparing to enter
the afterlife. She may not even be here
for this year’s festival. The Boss, too.
Not this time. He’ll be with her, so he’ll
miss the Grand Tug-of-war. Thanks for coming so early. Not at all, dear. Good morning. Hello, Tenko. I brought you some flowers. Thank you so much,
that’s very thoughtful. Takeshi is up on the roof. Oh, is he? The festival is
Dad’s obsession. But now Mom’s health
takes precedence. Such a loving couple. I wanted Mom to see me
performing as the Lead Drummer. Listen, dear. Please don’t miss
the Grand Tug-of-war. Don’t be silly. I’m from a long line
of proud Sendai women. I’ll not die in peace if that
disrupts our sacred festival. Don’t be silly.
I’ve already decided not to. But without the Grand Tug-of-war,
you’ll have nothing. I’d rather you divorce me,
than run away from it. Don’t be so silly. I’ll be fine.
I won’t give up so easily. Okay, I understand. I hate you! Why is it always
so complicated? I’ll go get some hot water. Thank you. I’d be very happy
if our Takeshi married her. Dad will never
agree to that. He wants Takeshi to have
a Japanese wife. That way of thinking
is so out-of-date. But she’s a doctor,
she’d never marry a steeplejack. You still don’t get it,
do you? See how well the company
functions without me? Times have changed, dear. Lead Drummer, eh?
Congratulations. The Sendai Grand
Tug-of-war Preservation Society I’m not qualified. Listen, Takeshi. The entire Uptown Crew
selected you. Because my father
did it before me? You’ve been in the
drum troupe twice already. You’re the same age
as Yoshidome. You’ve seen him perform many times.
You know how to do it. You’ve paid your dues
and never chased the spotlight. We’re all in agreement,
you should lead us. We should excuse ourselves. Takeshi isn’t capable. I’ll be fine in a week.
I’m not giving up. Sorry, but I’m afraid
that’s impossible. If Takeshi leads,
I guarantee we’ll lose. You all know that.
Right? Look, you’ll still have
your chance next year. It’s my once-in-a-lifetime chance. Do as you please. Congratulations, Takeshi. I really mean it. I feel like I’m being crushed
under everyone’s expectations. You’ll be fine.
You can handle it. Listen. If I do become
the Lead Drummer… And if… If our Uptown Crew wins… Jihyeun. I’m happy I’ll get to see
you perform before I leave. Leave? My residency ends in September. Then back to Korea? Sorry, I should have told you. It’s a condition of the program.
We must go back. I understand. I’ll honor you with the
performance of a lifetime. Tanaka Petroleum & Gas Uptown Lead Drummer
Takeshi Arima We’re pleased to be
one of your sponsors. Thank you very much. Mutual Credit Union We appreciate your support. I’m Takeshi Arima,
Lead Drummer. Downtown Lead Drummer
Gentaro Fukumoto We’ll do everything
we can to help. Thank you
for your support. Sendai Hotel You’re not a substitute for
Yoshidome. You’re your own man. Outdo your father’s performance.
Okay? I will. Sorry to keep you waiting. Leave it to me.
I’ll get head office onside, too. We appreciate your
cooperation and support. We’d like your entire
workforce to join our team. Understood.
Everyone who can, will. Kagoshima Bank The teams get very excited.
That can be dangerous. You monitors and judges
will be in the thick of it. The committee is as follows. Mr. Ishidome. Mr. Yamamoto. Mr. Miyamoto. Mr. Konishi. Mr. Ishizuka. That’s it, gentlemen. Thank you. I’m Takeshi Arima, lead drummer
for the Uptown Troupe. Over the next 10 days,
before the festival, let’s refine our strategy, deepen our
bonds and aim for a decisive victory. We need to plan an
effective strategy. Our disruptors must dislodge
at least 30 of their pullers. Thirty?
That’s impossible. They’ll have to. What? I only have one piece
of advice. The moment you let your arms drop,
that’s when you lose. Thank you. I guess Mom can’t be
there tomorrow. What about you? I won’t leave
your mother’s side. Remember, I’m a doctor. Jihyeun. If we win the battle tomorrow… The Downtown Crew will
win tomorrow. That’s for sure. But we need your
muscles and your hearts. If we come together as one,
in body and mind, we will win!
If we don’t, we won’t! Those are the words of
Lord Shimazu himself. Tomorrow, 1500 hearts will beat
as one, and we will win! Let’s do it, lads. Akko. If we have a win today… I’ll ask Jihyeun to marry me. Takeshi. Today we form and braid
our magnificent Sendai rope. On no account let it
drag on the ground. Roll it, roll it tight. Roll it, lift it,
then step back. Roll it, roll it, roll it. Lift it
and back again. Activate roadblocks.
Clear through to Sendai Station. All units
initiate traffic control. Both loops are heading
for the designated rope junction. Over 1500 people participated
in the braiding and splicing. It took a total of 9 hours
to lay the rope. It is 365m long,
weighing in at 7 tons. A total of 365 strands
are woven into it. It’s heavy, but you’re almost there.
Please persevere. Now place the rope
on its stand. This magnificent rope
was made by all of you. It is now fixed
at its rightful place. Yume, make us all proud. You’re all back
for the festival. We were all
born and raised here. We might not visit often, but we never miss
the Grand Tug-of-war. You’re the only one
who’s ever missed it. Can we get a beer? C’mon, sit down. Tenko couldn’t come,
she was on duty. You’ve been posted all over
Japan haven’t you? On disaster relief missions
and suchlike. The big earthquake in 2011? Yes.
That’s my job and my duty. Lead Drum Is that when your dad
was Lead Drummer? He looked magnificent. A good-looking man. -I was his biggest fan.
-You were. Here you are.
And it’s my treat. To cheer you up. Thank you! Cheers! Thanks, Mom. Hello. Hello there, Akko. You’re starting to show,
my dear. Take a seat. What a big belly. Your mom can’t make it? Jihyeun did ask the doctor
for special dispensation. So Takeshi’s girlfriend
isn’t coming, either? No, she’s tending to Mom. So you’ll be barracking
for Downtown? No, my boyfriend wants me cheering
for Uptown until it’s all over. Your sweet darling, eh? I still remember you
as a little girl. Don’t go there. If it isn’t Tenko. Look,
it’s the Old Feller. I hate that nickname. You’ve always looked old,
even as a kid. Three bowls of oden, please. Right away. Listen. I know you did it
on purpose. What do you mean? You deliberately injured yourself. A bit of play-acting
to boost Takeshi’s prestige. You’re a judo black belt,
you know how break a fall. You sacrificed yourself for Takeshi.
You silly man. It’s 2019, the 420th
anniversary of the festival. The Generals, Lead Drummers
and Brigadiers enter. Lead Drummer of the Uptown Crew
is Takeshi Arima. The Commanding General
is Akira Nakauchi. The Brigadier General, the disruptor,
is Minoru Tajima. Lead Drummer of the Downtown Crew
is Gentaro Fukumoto. The Commanding General
is Sadaharu Araki. The Brigadier General, the disruptor,
is Naoto Okazono. Takeshi!
You’re the 3rd generation! It is fast approaching
start-time of 8 PM. The Uptown rope-haulers march in,
wearing their distinctive red headbands. The Downtown rope-haulers enter
wearing their white headbands. Rope-haulers from both Crews,
assume your positions. Soon, the Disruptor Brigades
will enter. Both Disruptor Crews are led
by their Brigadier Generals. Each team fields
250 Disruptors. It’s their job to dislodge the
opposing teams rope-haulers, to prevent or distract them
from tugging the rope. Any gaps they create are soon
filled by their own team. Mrs. Arima isn’t coming
after all? Excuse me,
let us through. -Tenko!
-Mrs. Arima. You made it. I told the doctor
that I take full responsibility. The Generals and their Brigadiers
assume their positions. No, not yet.
Too soon. The drums signal the haulers
to pull the rope. Both teams are in place.
Go! Drums urge the Disruptors
to charge, and the Haulers to pull. The rope is barely moving.
Please give them a big a cheer. The furious tempo
of the drums. The Disruptors, push.
The Haulers, pull. The rope is slowly moving towards
the Downtown Crew’s area. Come on, Uptown Crew!
Pull that rope back. Visitors please keep
clear of the action. Don’t drift to the sides!
Back to the center. Disruptors, hold your positions.
Get back in line. Takeshi, bang that drum!
Harder! Come on Uptown, pull! Pull, pull! The rope continues towards
the Downtown Crew’s area. As the pace increases, please be
careful not to get trampled. The faster the pace,
the greater the danger. Here it comes,
hold steady! The Uptown loop
is finally in motion. Come on!
Get it in position! Make a path for
them, please. The Uptown loop
is ready to be coiled. Do not get any limbs
caught in the loop. Damn!
I’ll go look. The Uptown loop is fixed,
their drums are silent. The rope won’t move. Disruptors and Haulers, please assume
your positions for the next stage. The Uptown Crew are
formulating a strategy. After 30 minutes, the rope is
clearly in the Downtown area. The Downtown Crew are strong.
But the real test is yet to come. There’s still time to fight back before
the scheduled 9:45 finale. Both sides warily
scope out their opponents. Both Crews scramble to get their auxiliary
ropes in place for the final showdown. Each Crew has 400 auxiliary ropes. How many can they get in place
to the greatest effect? Rope haulers are rushing
to their positions. Can Takeshi do it? His opponent is very strong. When will the Uptown Crew strike back? Uptown Lead Drummer, Takeshi Arima,
must establish a winning beat and rhythm. He must judge
the best time to start. Both Crews are jostling for position,
waiting for the signal to begin. Be careful folks,
don’t get too close. The Uptown Lead Drummer
sets the pace. Takeshi, bang that drum! Come on Downtown Crew! The rope has barely moved an inch.
Stay firm, Uptown Crew. This year’s Downtown team
is very strong. The Uptown loop
is not budging. Those lads need to
give it a good heave. Pull, pull! Something’s wrong
with his drum. The Uptown drum skin appears
to have shattered. If the drums aren’t in perfect harmony,
the rope will not move. This year’s Downtown Crew
are formidable foes. The rope isn’t moving.
Downtown are holding firm. Takeshi!
Catch! Go Downtown, go! How much longer must I keep
saving his butt? The rope is finally heading towards
the Uptown staging area. The Uptown loop is free
of its mooring. Haul that rope, lads. The Uptown loop is off
and it’s moving. The momentum is pushing
all towards the Uptown area. It’s picking up speed,
moving faster. There’s no stopping them now. Downtown!
Hang in there, be strong! The drum, beat harder. The Downtown loop is fast
approaching the center post. They’ve done it!
The Downtown loop is in place. Now it is time
for the final judging. Drummers, beat your drums. Both teams haul that rope! Not much time left. It’s not moving. The Downtown Crew
needs to pull off a miracle here. It’s time! The judges move into place. At precisely 9:45, they begin
to sever the rope. That’s it!
The rope is cut. We won! This has been a momentous
Tug-of-war battle. A big thank-you
to our audience and visitors. Both teams’ Command Staff
gather at the mid-point. Disruptors and Rope Haulers
pour into the vacuum. This year, the win goes to
the Uptown Crew. They did it! Takeshi did it!
We won! This 2019 contest,
the 420th anniversary, ends with a victory
for the Uptown Crew. Let’s give them all
a big round of applause. This year’s Tug-of-war contest
was magnificent. Both teams will
leave the field of battle. Gentaro, head up high! Stick your chest out! Gentaro! Tenko, do you mind? Takeshi! Jihyeun! Tug-of-War
Grand Champion Akko, be careful. We’re late to go
visit your mom. So this is
Gentaro’s drum? The Tug-of-war
helped cement your marriage. By the way… What’s going on with
Takeshi and Jihyeun? Listen, Dad. Dad! I broke something! Are you okay, Dad? Lead Drummer My headband
It’s an amulet, to ward off evil. Thank you. Your sweat has soaked into it. Please give my
regards to all. Bye. You’ve finally
made up your mind. I’ll go see your
Tug-of-war. I’ll be waiting. And I’ll bring you back here. I will come for you. Jihyeun! Takahiro Miura Jiyoung Manami Higa Wakana Matsumoto Seishiro Nishida Mayumi Asaka Yuichi Nakamura Norihito Kaneko Takeshi Masu Mako Ishino Original Story & Produced by
